In a coordinated pre-dawn raid, Bangkok Metropolitan Police arrested eight Nigerian nationals and one Thai citizen over alleged drug trafficking activities in the Sukhumvit Soi 11 area of Khlong Toei Nuea, Watthana District a busy nightlife and tourist hotspot.
The operation, led by the Metropolitan Police Bureau’s Narcotics Division, followed weeks of surveillance after complaints from residents and tourists about open drug dealing and fraudulent activities reportedly linked to foreign nationals.
During the sting, more than 40 narcotics officers disguised as construction workers and nightlife patrons stormed several apartments in the area. According to police reports, some suspects attempted to hide drugs in their mouths, while others swallowed narcotics in an effort to destroy evidence.
Recovered from the scene were 3.8 grams of cocaine and cash amounting to 3,000 Thai baht (approximately $92).
The arrested individuals were identified as Onyekama Frankline (29), Onuoha Desmond (34), Nnawuke Lucky (29), Alahieobi Favour (35), Ubammadu Chibuzor (32), Amajioyi Chinaemeze (23), Udemgba Innocent (28), and Nwachukwu Chisom (41), all from Nigeria, alongside a Thai national, Phanuwat Thanawet (36) from Udon Thani Province.
Major General Theeradet Thumsuthee, Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, stated that the group allegedly smuggled drugs into Thailand by swallowing packets of narcotics, a concealment method used by international trafficking networks.
He added that investigations are ongoing to determine if the suspects are connected to a wider drug distribution network operating across Southeast Asia.
