At least two people have been killed in Morocco after police opened fire to stop demonstrators from storming a police station in Lqliaa, near the coastal city of Agadir, state media reported.
The fatalities are the first since youth-led protests erupted nationwide on Saturday, with demonstrators denouncing government spending on 2030 FIFA World Cup stadiums instead of investing in healthcare, education, and jobs.
Authorities said police acted in “legitimate self-defence” during Wednesday’s clashes. More than 400 people have been arrested across Morocco, while 260 police officers and 20 protesters have been injured in the unrest, which has spread to Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier, and Marrakesh.
The protests, coordinated under the banner GenZ 212, have been largely organized through social media and lack formal leadership. Youth unemployment in Morocco stands at 35.8%, fueling discontent among a generation demanding reforms.
