President Bola Tinubu has defended the removal of fuel subsidy, describing the former subsidy regime as a “fake life” that Nigeria could no longer afford to sustain.
Speaking during a chat session on the second day of the Africa CEO Forum, Tinubu said the country was facing severe economic pressure and risked bankruptcy if the subsidy system had continued.
According to the president, the subsidy regime encouraged corruption, smuggling, and the falsification of official documents.
“It is fake life to think the country can continue with a wasteful subsidy system in a global economy,” Tinubu said.
He added that maintaining the subsidy created serious economic challenges for the nation and undermined efforts to stabilise the economy.
