Nigerian Police Force DSP has reportedly died after shooting himself

A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) attached to the Nigerian Police Force has reportedly died after shooting himself amid an ongoing investigation into allegations of illegal arms supply to bandits, Sahara Reporters has reported.

The incident occurred in Niger State, where the officer was said to be under investigation following an audit of the Mobile Police Force armoury that allegedly revealed missing firearms and ammunition. Sources cited by Sahara Reporters said the probe was launched after several rifles and thousands of rounds of ammunition could not be accounted for, raising concerns about possible diversion of weapons to criminal elements.

According to the report, the officer allegedly shot himself while the investigation was still underway. Police authorities have yet to issue a detailed official statement on the circumstances surrounding his death.

The development comes amid heightened scrutiny of security agencies over the proliferation of arms and ongoing banditry across parts of northern Nigeria. Investigations into the incident are said to be continuing.
