Abuja, Nigeria – The Senate has called on the Nigerian Armed Forces to urgently recruit no fewer than 100,000 additional personnel as part of measures to reinforce the nation’s security architecture and tackle rising insecurity across several regions.
The resolution followed a motion raised on Monday over the abduction of 25 students of Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State. Lawmakers expressed deep concern over the growing spate of attacks and reiterated the need for a stronger military presence nationwide.
As part of its decisions, the Senate also moved to establish an ad-hoc committee to investigate the funding, utilization, and overall effectiveness of the Safe School Programme, which was designed to protect educational institutions from violent attacks.
In its deliberations, the Senate condemned the abduction in strong terms and extended its sympathies to the families of the victims. Lawmakers also mourned the killing of Brigadier General Uba and several military personnel in Borno State, describing the incidents as a tragic reminder of the sacrifices security operatives make in the line of duty.
The upper chamber reiterated its commitment to supporting policies and actions aimed at restoring peace and safety across the country.
