Police and security officials temporarily closed the main entrance of Parliament House after about 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators staged a protest inside the building on Tuesday.
The protest involved activists, including some linked to a humanitarian aid flotilla bound for Gaza, who gathered in the marble foyer of the parliament complex. Witnesses said the demonstrators knelt on the floor with their hands restrained behind their backs in a symbolic reenactment of footage showing detained flotilla members.
The demonstration was intended to mirror videos circulated last week by Itamar Ben-Gvir, which showed individuals from the Gaza-bound flotilla in custody following Israeli intervention. Protesters said the action was meant to draw attention to the ongoing humanitarian situation in Gaza and to express solidarity with Palestinians.
Security personnel and Australian Federal Police officers quickly moved to contain the protest, restricting access to the main entrance while parliamentary activities continued under heightened security measures. No immediate reports of injuries were released, and authorities have not yet confirmed whether any arrests were made during the demonstration.
