Riot police clashed with protesters in Paris on Tuesday as tens of thousands of demonstrators joined the “Bloquons Tout” (“Block Everything”) campaign, which disrupted traffic and services across major French cities.
In Paris, protesters rolled bins into the streets and set up blockades, prompting riot police to intervene. Tear gas was fired near the Gare du Nord where around 1,000 people had gathered. A high school in the capital was also blocked, with barricades later cleared by firefighters.
Similar protests were reported in Marseille, Montpellier, Nantes, Lyon, and Rennes, where Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau confirmed that demonstrators set a bus on fire.
The protests coincided with the swearing-in of Sébastien Lecornu as France’s new prime minister, following the removal of François Bayrou through a no-confidence vote. Lecornu becomes the country’s fourth prime minister within a year.
Speaking during the demonstrations, Christophe Lalande, a teacher, said: “Bayrou was ousted, now his policies must be eliminated.” Amar Lagha, a union member, added that workers were ready to resist: “We will fight on, and if necessary, we will die standing.”
