Registered political parties in Nigeria, operating under the umbrella of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), have called for the establishment of an independent body to handle the appointment of top officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) — including the Chairman, National Commissioners, and Secretary.
The political parties said the proposal is aimed at promoting transparency, neutrality, and public confidence in the country’s electoral process. They argued that the current system, where the President appoints INEC officials, raises concerns about possible bias and political influence.
According to IPAC, an independent appointment body would help ensure that only credible, non-partisan, and competent individuals are selected to oversee elections in Nigeria. This, they said, would significantly improve the integrity and credibility of future polls.
The council emphasized that electoral reforms of this nature are essential if Nigeria is to strengthen its democracy and restore citizens’ trust in the electoral system.
