The rescue organization Open Arms has reported the rescue of 58 migrants in distress in the central Mediterranean Sea on Wednesday, June 3.
In a statement shared on social media, the group said the rescued migrants included 24 unaccompanied minors. The boat had reportedly departed from Al-Khums in Libya and spent more than 24 hours at sea on an overcrowded fiberglass vessel without life jackets or navigation equipment.
According to the organization, rescue teams first distributed life jackets before safely transferring all occupants from the sinking boat, which had begun taking in water.
The minors were said to be from countries including Sudan, Eritrea, Egypt, Bangladesh, and Somalia.
Authorities have continued to raise concerns over dangerous migration routes across the Mediterranean, where many migrants attempt risky crossings in search of better living conditions.
