A Metropolitan Police officer was taken to hospital after disorder erupted in central London on Thursday night following France’s 2-0 victory over Morocco in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.
The disturbances occurred around Edgware Road, where some individuals reportedly threw bottles and other objects at police officers responding to the scene.
Police confirmed that one officer sustained injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. Several people were arrested in connection with the unrest. The force also dismissed social media claims suggesting that multiple officers had been injured.
The Metropolitan Police said investigations are ongoing, with officers reviewing CCTV footage and other evidence to identify those responsible for the violence.
The disorder followed Morocco’s elimination from the tournament, prompting a significant police presence in the area to restore order and maintain public safety.
Authorities have urged football fans to celebrate responsibly, warning that anyone involved in violence, vandalism or other criminal acts will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
