A Nigerian-born chief executive of a California-based home healthcare company, Cashmir Chinedu Luke, has been arrested in the United States for allegedly defrauding military veterans of more than $7 million.
According to a statement from the US Attorney’s Office, Luke was apprehended at the San Francisco International Airport while attempting to board a flight to Nigeria.
Prosecutors allege that he fraudulently obtained over $7 million in payments from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for healthcare services that were never provided. The complaint further claims he billed the government for care supposedly given to veterans weeks after they had already died.
Luke is expected to face federal charges as investigations continue.
