The Federal Government has announced plans to abolish the long-standing separation between Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) as part of sweeping reforms aimed at tackling Nigeria’s growing education crisis, following revelations that over 20 million children are currently out of school.
The proposed reform seeks to integrate secondary education into a continuous six-year programme, replacing the existing 3-3 structure that separates junior and senior secondary levels. According to the government, the move is intended to eliminate barriers that prevent many students from progressing from JSS to SSS.
The Minister of Education disclosed that millions of Nigerian children fail to transition beyond junior secondary school due to financial constraints, poor infrastructure, insecurity, and other socio-economic challenges. Officials believe that merging both levels of secondary education into one uninterrupted system will improve retention, reduce dropout rates, and ensure more children complete their basic education.
The reform is also expected to simplify the education system, reduce administrative bottlenecks, and strengthen learning outcomes by providing students with a seamless academic progression. Education authorities say the new framework will align with ongoing efforts to improve access to quality education and achieve universal basic education goals.
If approved and fully implemented, the policy would mark one of the most significant changes to Nigeria’s education system in decades. However, experts have noted that its success will depend on adequate funding, improved school infrastructure, recruitment of qualified teachers, and effective implementation across all states.
The proposal is expected to undergo further consultations with state governments, education stakeholders, and relevant agencies before a final decision is taken on nationwide implementation.
