A federal judge is set to decide Friday whether to grant a temporary restraining order blocking the Trump administration from deploying National Guard troops to Oregon. The case comes after Oregon and Portland officials jointly sued the administration, calling the deployment illegal and politically motivated.
The Trump administration has defended the move as necessary to protect federal facilities, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) sites, from demonstrators. Officials have described recent protests outside the Portland ICE building as mostly peaceful, disputing the administration’s claims of “violent riots” tied to Antifa.
The legal challenge argues that federal law allows the president to deploy state troops only under narrow circumstances, such as rebellion or foreign invasion. About 200 Oregon National Guard members have been mobilized as part of the operation, though local authorities say they are not yet on the ground in Portland.
Trump appointee Judge Karin Immergut will preside over the hearing after US District Judge Michael Simon recused himself over a potential conflict of interest. City leaders and Democratic officials have expressed concern that the presence of National Guard troops could inflame tensions and spark further protests.
Federal officials maintain the deployment is intended to safeguard federal interests and property in Oregon.
