At least nine Nigerian soldiers have been killed following the detonation of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) allegedly planted by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State, according to security sources.
The incident reportedly occurred near Gubio, as troops were returning from an operation in Maiduguri, the state capital. The explosive devices detonated along the route, causing multiple casualties among the soldiers. Several others were said to have sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
A military source disclosed that the attack targeted a troop movement, underscoring the continued use of roadside explosives by insurgents to ambush security forces in the North-East.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Army has yet to release an official statement on the incident. The attack adds to growing concerns over persistent insecurity in Borno State, despite ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the region.
