Plateau State has once again been plunged into mourning following renewed terrorist attacks on two farming communities in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area. The coordinated assaults, which occurred late Monday night, left at least 13 people dead, several others severely injured, and extensive farmlands destroyed.
The affected communities Rachas village in Heipang District and Rawuru village in Fan District came under siege by suspected Fulani terrorists, who reportedly stormed the areas in large numbers, shooting sporadically and setting houses ablaze.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the attackers operated for hours without immediate intervention from security personnel. Villagers, mostly women and children, fled into nearby bushes for safety as gunshots echoed through the night.
A local youth leader in the area, who spoke to Plateau News Watch, said the attackers targeted both lives and livelihood, destroying crops and farmlands ready for harvest. “They came around midnight, shooting at anyone in sight. Many people died instantly, and several others were taken to hospitals with gunshot wounds,” he said.
Security operatives were later deployed to the scene to restore order, while rescue teams and community volunteers worked through the night to evacuate the injured and recover bodies of the deceased.
Chairman of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area condemned the attack, describing it as “a tragic reminder of the lingering insecurity” facing Plateau’s rural communities. He called on the state and federal governments to intensify efforts to end the recurring violence and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
The latest incident adds to the growing list of violent attacks in Plateau, where hundreds have been killed and displaced over the years due to clashes between farmers and armed herders.
Authorities have yet to issue an official death toll, but community sources confirmed that 13 people lost their lives, dozens sustained injuries, and farmlands worth millions of naira were destroyed.
Meanwhile, humanitarian groups have appealed for urgent relief materials and medical assistance for the displaced victims who are currently taking refuge in nearby communities.
