NAIROBI, Kenya
Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has passed away at the age of 80.
Odinga reportedly died on Wednesday while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in India.
In recent weeks, speculation had swirled around the veteran politician’s health, though family members and close allies repeatedly dismissed claims that he was in critical condition.
A formidable force in Kenyan politics for decades, Odinga served as the country’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, following the disputed 2007 presidential election that led to a power-sharing deal. He also made five unsuccessful bids for the presidency, remaining one of the nation’s most influential and resilient political figures.
