The global football body, FIFA, has reignited a nationwide debate over accountability in Nigerian football after sharing a photo of the Kebbi State stadium project on its official social media page.
The picture, which showed the ongoing construction of the $1.2 million facility in Birnin Kebbi, sparked outrage among football fans who questioned the management of funds by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) under the FIFA Forward development programme.
Following the post, Nigerians took to social media using the hashtag #SaveNigerianFootball, demanding transparency from football authorities and calling for explanations on how funds meant for infrastructure development were utilized.
Football analyst Chinedu Mobike alleged that millions of dollars allocated for projects in Kebbi and Delta states were mismanaged. “The stadiums are either incomplete or in poor condition, yet millions have been reported as spent,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
In response to the public backlash, the NFF released a statement assuring that all funds received from FIFA and CAF were properly accounted for and audited. The federation maintained that the Kebbi project was ongoing and in line with FIFA’s financial regulations.
However, critics say the statement failed to address broader concerns about delays and lack of visible progress in football infrastructure across the country.
The controversy has reignited scrutiny over Nigeria’s sports administration, with many stakeholders urging the NFF to publish detailed financial records of all FIFA-supported projects to restore public trust.
