The Lagos State Government has commenced a statewide HIV impact survey aimed at strengthening treatment and prevention efforts, with over 11,000 residents expected to participate.
The initiative, launched in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), NACA, NCDC, and other partners, will cover 205 Enumeration Areas and 6,150 households across the 20 Local Government Areas of the state.
Speaking at the flag-off town hall meeting themed “Every Step Counts: Towards an HIV-Free Nigeria,” the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, said the survey would provide reliable data on HIV prevalence, treatment coverage, and viral load suppression.
Officials from the CDC, NACA, and NCDC stressed that the survey’s findings will guide future health decisions, while community leaders and mobilisers were tasked with ensuring grassroots participation.
According to the Lagos State AIDS Programme Coordinator, Dr. Oladipupo Fisher, the mobilisation drive will involve door-to-door visits, town halls, posters, and community outreach to build trust and encourage residents to cooperate with field workers.
Stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the process, describing it as a critical step in Nigeria’s journey toward controlling the HIV epidemic and closing gaps in treatment access.
