Ecuadorian Footballer Jonathan González Fatally Shot in Esmeraldas

Esmeraldas, Ecuador

Jonathan González, popularly known as “Speedy”, has been killed in an armed attack at a residence in the coastal province of Esmeraldas.

Police confirmed that the 31-year-old winger was shot on Friday, September 19, during the assault. Another individual also died while being rushed to hospital.

González, who played for international clubs including Olimpia (Paraguay) and León (Mexico), was until his death part of Ecuador’s second-division side, Exapromo Costa FC.

His killing is the third murder of an athlete in Ecuador this September, underscoring rising insecurity in the country. Esmeraldas, which borders Colombia, has become a hotspot of violent clashes between drug gangs.

The Ecuadorian Football Federation and several clubs have expressed condolences to his family, describing his death as a huge loss to the football community.
