Female students staying at the Queens Hostel of the , Numan campus, were reportedly attacked by suspected armed robbers in the early hours of Thursday.
The attackers, said to be more than ten in number and armed with machetes, pistols, and clubs, allegedly stormed the hostel around 2:00am, breaking into rooms and forcing students to surrender their mobile phones, money, power banks, and other valuables.
One of the victims, who requested anonymity, said the gang threatened students and warned them against resisting.
“We cried for help from the security personnel attached to the school, but nobody responded until several rooms had already been ransacked,” the student said.
According to the victims, about 15 mobile phones, power banks, and earphones were stolen during the operation.
In response to the incident, the Registrar of the Polytechnic, Mallam Sani Ibrahim Bawalle, on behalf of the Acting Rector, Dr. Harrison Edan Mbasumai, visited the affected students to sympathize with them and reassure them of the institution’s support.
Speaking during the visit, the Acting Rector expressed concern over what he described as obvious security lapses, noting that security operatives allegedly failed to respond despite the noise and distress calls from the hostel.
He assured students that the management would immediately review and strengthen the institution’s security system to prevent future occurrences.
The Peace Corps Security Organisation is currently in charge of security operations at the Polytechnic.
