Abuja Barber Drags Nigeria Police, Bwari DPO To Court, Demands ₦1Billion Compensation Over Alleged Loss Of Eye

An Abuja-based barber has filed a ₦1billion lawsuit against the Nigeria Police Force and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Bwari Division after allegedly losing one of his eyes to a tear gas canister reportedly fired during a police operation in the area.

According to reports, the victim accused officers attached to the Bwari Police Division of using excessive force during a raid, alleging that the tear gas canister struck him directly in the eye and caused permanent damage.

The incident was said to have occurred during New Year celebrations in Bwari, Abuja, when police officers allegedly dispersed residents and arrested several people. The victim reportedly underwent treatment at multiple hospitals before doctors removed the affected eye due to the severity of the injury.

Human rights advocates and residents have since called for an independent investigation into the conduct of the officers involved, while the lawsuit seeks compensation for medical expenses, emotional trauma, and alleged violation of the victim’s fundamental human rights.
