The Federal Government has confirmed plans to replace the iconic khaki uniform worn by National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members with a new Adire-inspired outfit as part of a comprehensive reform package approved for the scheme.
According to the Minister of Youth Development, the redesigned uniform is intended to reflect professionalism, national identity, and cultural heritage while giving the NYSC a more modern image. The change is part of the most significant overhaul of the scheme since it was established over five decades ago.
The reforms also introduce several key changes, including:
- Extension of the orientation camp to six weeks.
- Appointment of civilian leadership to oversee the NYSC.
- Deployment of corps members based on security risk assessments.
- Expanded training in entrepreneurship, digital skills, and leadership development.
- Skills-based postings that align with graduates’ academic qualifications and career aspirations.
The Federal Government said the reforms are designed to transform the NYSC into a more skills-focused and youth-empowering institution capable of preparing graduates for the demands of today’s economy.
