Nigeria has announced the discovery of significant deposits of critical minerals in Kaduna State, a development officials say could strengthen the country’s position in the global supply chain for minerals used in clean energy technologies and reduce its dependence on oil revenue.
According to a report by The Northern Miner, the newly identified mineral deposits include lithium, nickel, copper, gold, rare-earth elements, and platinum-group metals resources that are in growing demand for the production of batteries, electric vehicles, and renewable energy technologies.
Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, described the discovery as a “world-class” mineral province, saying it has the potential to transform the country’s mining sector and support broader economic diversification efforts.
The announcement comes as Africa’s largest oil producer intensifies efforts to expand its non-oil economy by developing its vast solid mineral resources. The Federal Government has also been promoting policies aimed at encouraging local processing and value addition, rather than exporting raw mineral ores.
However, industry experts have cautioned that several challenges could hinder large-scale development of the newly discovered deposits. These include inadequate infrastructure, persistent electricity shortages, illegal mining activities, and regulatory bottlenecks that may discourage investment and delay commercial production.
If successfully developed, the Kaduna mineral reserves could position Nigeria as a key player in the global market for critical minerals, which are essential to the ongoing transition toward cleaner energy and advanced manufacturing.
