The Benue State House of Assembly has once again approved a change of name for the state-owned university in Makurdi, sparking fresh debate over the institution’s identity.
The university, originally renamed Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, will now bear the shorter title Father Adasu University, Makurdi. Lawmakers argued that the earlier name was too long and impractical for administrative use.
During Thursday’s plenary session, the Assembly also gave its nod to upgrade the College of Education in Katsina-Ala and the College of Education in Oju into degree-awarding institutions, signaling the state government’s commitment to expanding access to higher education.
The decision marks the second time in recent years that the university has undergone a name change, fueling mixed reactions among residents, students, and education stakeholders. While some see the adjustment as necessary for simplicity, others believe frequent renaming risks undermining the institution’s brand and stability.
