The Government of The Gambia has expressed interest in adopting aspects of Nigeria’s public service reform initiatives as part of efforts to improve civil service training and enhance government administration.
The disclosure was made by Alieu Njie, Secretary to the Cabinet and Head of the Civil Service of The Gambia, during a visit by a Gambian delegation to the Public Service Institute of Nigeria (PSIN) in Abuja.
Njie described Nigeria as a “big sister” to The Gambia, noting that Nigeria has consistently supported his country in key sectors, including security, healthcare, and technology. He said the purpose of the visit was to study Nigeria’s achievements in public sector reforms and explore ways of implementing similar strategies in The Gambia.
According to him, the Gambian government is particularly interested in learning from Nigeria’s experience in civil service capacity building, staff development, and administrative modernization.
Speaking during the engagement, Dr. Imeh Okon, Director-General of PSIN, said the visit would further strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries while providing an avenue for knowledge sharing and institutional collaboration.
Okon highlighted the institute’s achievements, including the successful conduct of thousands of promotion examinations through technology-driven platforms and the expansion of training programmes aimed at improving the competence and efficiency of public servants.
She added that continued cooperation between Nigeria and The Gambia would contribute to the development of stronger and more effective public service institutions across the region.
