A United States federal judge has overturned a set of broad immigration processing restrictions introduced under President Donald Trump’s administration, ruling that the measures unlawfully delayed immigration applications from individuals originating from 39 countries, most of them in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
Delivering the judgment, John McConnell stated that the November 2025 policy improperly prevented applicants from receiving decisions on key immigration matters, including asylum requests, work permits, permanent residency (green cards), and citizenship applications.
The court heard that thousands of applicants had complied with existing immigration requirements and followed lawful procedures, yet their cases remained unresolved for several months because the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services declined to process or decide their applications.
Judge McConnell ruled that the restrictions lacked a valid legal foundation and unfairly discriminated against applicants based on their countries of origin. He further held that the administration’s actions exceeded its legal authority and deprived affected individuals of timely consideration of their immigration requests.
The ruling marks a significant legal setback for the immigration policies introduced during Trump’s administration and is being welcomed by immigrant advocacy organizations and labor unions that filed the lawsuit challenging the measures.
