Stockholm, September 9, 2025 – A dramatic scene unfolded in Sweden on Tuesday when the newly appointed Health Minister, Elisabet Lann, collapsed during her first government press conference.
Lann, a Christian Democrat politician and municipal councilor in Gothenburg, was standing alongside Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and other cabinet members when she suddenly slumped forward, hitting her head on the lectern.
Party leader Ebba Busch and senior officials rushed to her aid while security personnel provided medical assistance before escorting her out. The incident, captured on video and widely circulated on social media, showed the minister falling face-first as journalists and aides watched in shock.
Shortly afterward, Lann returned to the room, reassuring reporters: “This was not exactly a normal Tuesday, and this is what can happen when you have a blood sugar drop.” She did not appear to have sustained injuries, and it remains unclear whether she required further medical treatment. The press conference was subsequently canceled.
Witnesses described the moment as alarming, with one reporter saying: “It looked really bad. She fell right in front of me.”
The collapse came just hours after her appointment, following the sudden resignation of her predecessor, Acko Ankarberg Johansson, on Monday. Before the incident, Lann had outlined her priorities, stressing the need to address long waiting times in healthcare and calling for stronger government control.
Healthcare reform remains a central issue for the Christian Democrats, who have previously pushed for nationalisation to resolve Sweden’s healthcare crisis. Lann, part of a June 2025 committee that ruled full nationalisation premature, will now be tasked with increasing state oversight of the system.
