A woman reportedly collapsed after she and her partner received 100 lashes each for allegedly engaging in sex outside marriage under strict Sharia laws enforced in Indonesia’s Aceh province.
The incident took place in the city of Banda Aceh, located on the northern tip of Sumatra Island, where authorities publicly carried out the punishment before onlookers.
According to reports, the woman had to be carried away after the caning session, while her partner was seen visibly struggling during the punishment. The lashes were administered by an executioner dressed in full-body brown clothing and a white face mask.
The couple were among several individuals punished by the Banda Aceh Sharia Court and Prosecutor’s Office for violating Islamic laws in the province. Offences reportedly included extramarital relationships and meetings arranged through online platforms.
Aceh remains the only province in Muslim-majority Indonesia permitted to implement Sharia law, where unmarried couples are prohibited from living or sleeping together.
