Nasarawa Senator Godiya Akwashiki Dies at 52

Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District in Nigeria’s National Assembly, has died at the age of 52, family sources confirmed on Thursday.

A source speaking on condition of anonymity told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Akwashiki passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, in a hospital in India, where he had been receiving treatment for a protracted illness.

Akwashiki, a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), was first elected to the Senate in 2019 and won a second consecutive term in the 2023 general elections, becoming the only senator from Nasarawa North to achieve back-to-back victories in the district’s history.

Before his tenure in the upper chamber, he served in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, rising to the positions of Majority Leader and Deputy Speaker.

Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Akwashiki was regarded as a grassroots politician with a strong focus on constituency development.

Political associates and constituents have described his death as a significant loss to the state’s political landscape, noting his contributions to legislative oversight and community empowerment programmes.

Details of funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
