The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Jos chapter, has warned the Federal Government to fulfil all outstanding agreements reached with the union or risk another nationwide strike.
The warning was issued on Tuesday after a congress meeting held at the university campus, where members expressed frustration over what they described as the government’s continued neglect of their welfare and previous commitments.
Chairperson of the UNIJOS ASUU, Dr. Chris Piwuna, said the union can no longer guarantee industrial harmony if the Federal Government fails to implement the terms of agreements signed in past negotiations.
“We are calling on the government to honour its promises regarding funding for university revitalisation, payment of earned academic allowances, and withheld salaries. Failure to do so will leave us with no option but to resume strike action,” Piwuna stated.
He also criticised the delay in implementing the new wage award and the continued use of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), which he said violates the autonomy of Nigerian universities.
The union urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to prioritise the education sector and engage constructively with ASUU to prevent another disruption of academic activities across campuses.
A prolonged strike, observers warn, could further destabilise the academic calendar and deepen the crisis in Nigeria’s public university system.
