House of Representatives Urges Federal Government to Invest in Affordable Housing, Ease Pressure on Rental Market

The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to prioritise investment in affordable housing projects across the country as part of efforts to tackle Nigeria’s growing housing deficit.

In a resolution adopted on Thursday, lawmakers urged the government to develop and implement policies that would guarantee access to low-cost housing for citizens, particularly low- and middle-income earners who continue to face challenges in securing decent accommodation.

The House noted that rising rent prices and limited housing supply have placed enormous pressure on Nigerians, especially in urban centres such as Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. It warned that without deliberate government intervention, the situation could worsen, leading to increased homelessness and economic hardship.

Lawmakers also emphasised the need for stronger partnerships between the public and private sectors to expand housing delivery through mortgage financing, land reforms, and incentives for developers to build affordable homes.

The motion, which was sponsored by several members, tasked the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development to work closely with relevant agencies to review existing housing policies and align them with current socio-economic realities.

The House further called on the government to ensure that future housing projects are evenly distributed across all regions, ensuring that every Nigerian has the opportunity to own or access decent shelter.
