The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to strengthen the enforcement of safety standards for tankers and heavy-duty vehicles across the country.
The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Saidu Abdullahi, representing Bida/Gbako/Katcha Federal Constituency of Niger State, during Wednesday’s plenary session.
This comes in the wake of a tragic tanker explosion that occurred on Tuesday in the Essa community along the Agaie–Bida road in Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State. According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), at least 39 people were killed and over 60 others sustained injuries in the incident.
While presenting his motion, Abdullahi described the tragedy as one in a series of recurrent tanker explosions and fatal road accidents along the Bida–Agaie–Lapai–Lambata–Diko corridor. He lamented that the road has remained in a deplorable condition for decades despite multiple rehabilitation contracts awarded by successive administrations.
He added that the project was once placed under the Road Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme a public-private partnership initiative aimed at leveraging corporate tax obligations for critical infrastructure delivery but noted that no significant progress has been made so far.
