Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has condemned calls for the killing of repentant insurgents and secessionists, describing such actions as inconsistent with religious teachings and international law.
Gumi made the remarks in a Facebook post on Friday, days after some lawmakers urged the Federal Government to discontinue the rehabilitation of repentant terrorists and instead prosecute individuals found guilty of terrorism and related offences.
The cleric maintained that those who have renounced violence should be treated in accordance with the law, arguing that extrajudicial killings violate both religious principles and internationally recognised legal standards.
His comments come amid renewed public debate over the Federal Government’s deradicalisation and rehabilitation programme for former insurgents.
