Suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists have launched a coordinated attack on Logomani community in Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State, killing a soldier and destroying several public facilities, including a police outpost, a primary healthcare centre, and classrooms in a primary school.
The attack reportedly occurred late Tuesday night when the insurgents stormed the community after launching an assault on the Forward Operating Base (FOB) operated by troops of Operation Hadin Kai. Residents said the attackers fired sporadically, forcing people to flee before setting critical public infrastructure ablaze.
Confirming the incident, the Acting Military Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai, Capt. Muhammed Goni, said troops successfully repelled the assault after intense fighting with the terrorists. He disclosed that although the attackers briefly breached part of the base’s defensive perimeter, soldiers regrouped and launched a counter-offensive that forced the insurgents to retreat with significant casualties.
According to the military, one soldier was killed during the exchange of gunfire, while two military gun trucks and other combat equipment were damaged. The army, however, assured that the base remains under the control of Nigerian troops, with reinforcements deployed and clearance operations ongoing to strengthen security in the area.
A resident, who spoke anonymously, said the heavily armed terrorists overpowered security forces before setting fire to two classrooms in a primary school, a police outpost, and the community’s primary healthcare centre.
A combined team of military personnel, police officers, and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) reportedly pursued the fleeing insurgents after the attack, although they had already escaped deep into the surrounding area.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Ngala Local Government Area, Mala Tijjani Ngala, visited Logomani on Wednesday to assess the extent of the destruction. During the visit, he inspected the damaged police post, healthcare facility, and school and pledged to forward the assessment report to the Borno State Government to facilitate urgent intervention.
The council chairman also urged residents to remain calm and continue cooperating with security agencies as efforts to restore peace and normalcy in the community continue.
