Washington, D.C. — U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to sue The New York Times, accusing the newspaper of defamation and seeking $15 billion in damages.
Trump, in a statement posted Monday on his Truth Social account, alleged that the Times has engaged in publishing falsehoods about him, his family, and his business empire. He said his lawyers are preparing to file the lawsuit in the state of Florida.
“This has gone on for too long. It has to stop,” Trump wrote, stressing that the lawsuit aims to curb what he described as a pattern of “lies” from the newspaper.
The President further accused The New York Times of operating as “a mouthpiece for Democrats,” though he provided no evidence to support the allegation.
Trump’s announcement marks the latest escalation in his long-standing dispute with the U.S. media, particularly with The New York Times, which has frequently published investigative reports critical of his political and business dealings.
If pursued, the case could become one of the largest defamation suits ever filed against a major American media outlet.
