CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland – Several people have been killed and others wounded after a powerful explosion tore through a bar in the luxury Alpine ski resort town of Crans-Montana, Swiss police said early Thursday.
The blast occurred at about 1:30 a.m. local time (0030 GMT) in a popular venue called Le Constellation, where New Year’s Eve revelers were gathered as 2026 celebrations were underway. Authorities described the cause of the explosion as unknown and investigations are ongoing.
Police, firefighters and multiple emergency crews responded to the scene, where images shared by local media showed a building engulfed in flames and intensive rescue operations underway. More than 100 people were reportedly inside the bar at the time of the incident.
Gaëtan Lathion, a spokesman for the Valais cantonal police, confirmed there are “several dead and several injured” and that the situation is being closely monitored as emergency services continue their efforts.
At least two people have been critically hurt and authorities have established a helpline for families of those affected. Officials have not ruled out any potential causes as investigations proceed.
