President Bola Tinubu has directed a special committee of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to immediately roll out measures aimed at reducing the rising cost of food items across the country.
The directive, announced on Wednesday by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, came during a workshop for Senate correspondents in Abuja.
According to Abdullahi, the President instructed the committee to focus on removing transportation and logistics bottlenecks that continue to drive up food prices despite availability in some regions. He noted that the move is part of Tinubu’s push for food sovereignty, which goes beyond production to ensure affordability, accessibility, and nutrition for Nigerians.
The minister further revealed that the government is set to launch a Farmer Soil Health Scheme to boost productivity, while also reforming the cooperative sector to strengthen rural farmers and reduce dependency on middlemen.
The committee is expected to present concrete steps to FEC in the coming weeks as part of broader efforts to stabilize the economy and ease the cost-of-living burden on citizens.
