Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has strongly criticized the recent military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, describing it as unacceptable and a setback for democratic governance.
Addressing Senegal’s National Assembly in Dakar, Sonko urged authorities in Guinea-Bissau to allow the full compilation and announcement of election results to determine the legitimate winner. He stressed that the country’s electoral commission must be given the space to complete its work and publicly declare the outcome.
The crisis deepened after President Umaro Sissoco Embaló fled the country before the official release of election results, claiming that the military had seized power.
Sonko called for respect for constitutional order and urged regional leaders to support a peaceful resolution to the political turmoil in Guinea-Bissau.
