Japan’s parliament has formally re-elected Sanae Takaichi as the country’s 105th prime minister, confirming her leadership following a landslide victory for her ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in a snap general election earlier this month.
In a special session of the National Diet on 18 February 2026, lawmakers from both the lower and upper houses voted to appoint Takaichi, who secured broad support after the LDP and its allies won more than two-thirds of seats in the House of Representatives.
Under constitutional procedure, Takaichi and her cabinet resigned en masse ahead of the vote and were immediately re-appointed, with virtually all ministers expected to retain their posts in her second administration.
Takaichi, 64, first became prime minister last October, making history as Japan’s first female leader. Her re-election consolidates her political mandate and positions her to pursue key policy priorities including economic measures, defense strengthening, and fiscal reforms amid both domestic and regional challenges.
The second Takaichi cabinet began work immediately after the parliamentary vote, signalling continuity in government as Tokyo navigates evolving geopolitical and economic landscapes.
