The Chief Judge of Rivers State, Simeon Amadi, has declined a request to constitute a judicial panel to investigate Governor Siminalayi Fubara, citing an existing court judgment.
In a response to the Rivers State House of Assembly, Amadi said the request was inconsistent with a subsisting judicial ruling, which, he noted, prevents him from taking further action on the matter. The lawmakers had asked the chief judge to set up a seven-member panel to probe allegations of gross misconduct leveled against the governor and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
The move by the assembly was part of an ongoing political standoff in the state, which has heightened tensions between the executive and legislative arms of government.
The chief judge’s decision effectively stalls the proposed investigation, pending further legal clarification. The Rivers State House of Assembly has not yet publicly reacted to the development.
