The Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) has plunged into a deep leadership crisis just days before the Africa Cup of Nations, following an escalating conflict between federation president Samuel Eto’o and national team coach Marc Brys.
Despite being contracted until 2026, Brys was informed by Eto’o that his services were no longer required, triggering a chaotic standoff that resulted in the release of two separate AFCON squad lists for Cameroon.
On December 1, a 28-man squad reportedly backed by Eto’o’s camp was published, with David Pagou announced as interim coach. The list excluded major players including goalkeeper André Onana, forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, and team captain Vincent Aboubakar. Local reports claim Aboubakar’s omission was aimed at stopping him from surpassing Eto’o’s national goal-scoring record.
Coach Brys responded swiftly by issuing his own squad list, reinstating the dropped senior players and openly questioning the rationale behind excluding key figures ahead of a major tournament in Morocco.
The dispute has thrown Cameroon’s AFCON preparations into uncertainty, with concerns growing about the team’s stability and readiness as the tournament approaches.
