The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reported that Yobe and Benue states recorded the highest number of newly identified internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Nigeria, highlighting the continued impact of insecurity and communal violence across parts of the country.
Presenting the NHRC’s internal displacement dashboard, the Commission disclosed that Yobe State recorded over 2,000 new IDPs, while Benue accounted for nearly 1,900, placing both states at the top of the displacement chart among the states surveyed.
According to the NHRC, the latest figures show that thousands of Nigerians were newly displaced by factors including armed attacks, farmer–herder clashes, banditry, and insurgency-related violence. The Commission noted that children constitute a significant proportion of those affected, raising concerns about access to education, healthcare, and protection.
Other states identified in the report include Adamawa, Borno, Taraba, Katsina, Zamfara, Kano, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Sokoto, where varying levels of displacement were also recorded.
The NHRC further pointed to challenges in the management of displacement, including gaps in data collection, limited access to humanitarian support, and difficulties faced by returnees attempting to resettle in insecure communities.
The Commission called on federal and state governments to strengthen early-warning mechanisms, fully implement the Kampala Convention, and scale up humanitarian interventions to address the growing displacement crisis across Nigeria.
