A tense security incident unfolded near the White House on Saturday evening after an armed man reportedly opened fire, prompting a rapid response from agents of the US Secret Service.
According to authorities, the suspect began shooting in an area close to the White House complex, forcing security personnel to immediately engage the attacker in a gun battle. During the exchange of gunfire, the gunman was shot dead by Secret Service agents.
Officials also confirmed that a bystander was struck during the incident. The identity and condition of the injured person were not immediately released as emergency responders rushed victims from the scene for medical treatment.
President Trump was inside the White House when the shooting occurred. However, authorities stated that the president was never in direct danger and was not affected by the attack.
In a statement issued after the incident, Secret Service communications chief Anthony Guglielmi said agents acted swiftly to neutralize the suspect and secure the area around the presidential residence. Security operations around the White House were intensified immediately after the shooting, with several nearby streets temporarily restricted as investigators examined the scene.
