Ghana has agreed to receive Nigerians and other West African nationals deported from the United States, in a move that underscores the region’s migration challenges.
The deportees, identified as undocumented migrants, were recently repatriated by U.S. immigration authorities. While many of them are Nigerian, the group also includes citizens from several other West African countries.
Authorities in Accra confirmed that Ghana would temporarily host the returnees, facilitating their transit and safe passage to their respective homelands in line with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) protocols.
Officials say the decision reflects Ghana’s humanitarian responsibility and its role in regional solidarity, but the situation highlights the growing crisis of irregular migration and forced returns affecting many African families.
The development comes as West African governments continue talks with Washington on the treatment of their nationals abroad and on how to address the root causes of migration pressures.
