Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has questioned the effectiveness of centralised policing in tackling insecurity, asking whether the creation of state police is the missing link in ending persistent violence.
Speaking in Jos during an interaction with the Nigerian Guild of Editors, Mutfwang said Abuja’s command structure was too distant to respond swiftly to the realities on the ground.“The reality is that attackers infiltrate from Taraba, Nasarawa, or Kaduna, strike our villages, and retreat.
Abuja cannot monitor these local terrains the way our people can,” he said.The governor disclosed that 1,450 young operatives had been recruited under Operation Rainbow, a community-based security initiative, and would begin training next week. He argued that with proper safeguards, fears of political misuse of state police could be addressed.
Mutfwang noted that federations such as the United States operate multiple policing layers effectively, insisting Nigeria too could make it work if the political will existed.On new security strategies, he revealed that surveillance drones had been deployed across Plateau, capturing movements of armed groups and helping security forces respond faster to attacks.
“Our drones have captured clear images of bandit movements across ungoverned spaces. This has enabled ground troops to respond quickly. However, without consistent air support, we sometimes lose the advantage.
Manpower is also a huge challenge,” he explained.The governor recalled a recent ambush on security escorts in Bokkos during farming preparations, which forced the state to rethink its displaced persons’ return strategy.He emphasised that while Plateau would continue pressing for more federal security deployment, investment in grassroots intelligence and rapid-response systems would remain a priority.
