Former United States President, Donald Trump, has announced that Nigeria has been placed on the list of Countries of Particular Concern (CPC) by the US government due to what he described as the “slaughter” of Christians across the country.
According to Trump, the designation highlights Nigeria’s alleged failure to protect the rights and safety of religious minorities, especially Christians who have been victims of violent attacks, killings, and persecution in various parts of the country.
The “Country of Particular Concern” label is the highest ranking under the International Religious Freedom Act. It is reserved for nations that have engaged in or tolerated “particularly severe violations of religious freedom,” such as systematic discrimination, imprisonment, or killings based on faith.
Trump, in his remarks, criticised what he termed the “silence” of the international community over the widespread religious violence in Nigeria. He urged the US government and global partners to take stronger diplomatic and humanitarian actions to stop what he described as “religious cleansing” against Christians in Africa’s most populous nation.
Nigeria has faced recurring religious tensions and sectarian violence, especially in its northern and Middle Belt regions, where militant groups and bandits have carried out attacks on communities.
The US State Department is expected to outline further implications of the designation, which could include sanctions or restrictions aimed at pressuring the Nigerian government to improve its record on religious freedom.
