Nigeria President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a sweeping reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), introducing a new deployment policy that will assign corps members to states based on security risk assessments instead of the existing nationwide posting system.
Under the new arrangement, prospective corps members will no longer be posted indiscriminately to states facing severe security challenges. Instead, deployments to such states will primarily involve indigenes, residents, graduates of institutions located within those states, and candidates from neighbouring states within the same geopolitical zone, subject to comprehensive security evaluations.
The President said the policy forms part of a broader effort to strengthen the safety and welfare of corps members while preserving the NYSC’s core objective of promoting national unity and integration.
According to Tinubu, the country’s evolving security situation has made it necessary to adopt a more practical and flexible deployment system that reflects current realities.
Beyond the deployment changes, the President approved several additional reforms aimed at modernising the scheme. These include extending the NYSC orientation camp from the current three weeks to six weeks, replacing the military-appointed Director-General with a civilian Director-General, and expanding the orientation curriculum to include entrepreneurship, leadership development, civic responsibility, innovation, and job creation.
To facilitate the implementation of the reforms, Tinubu directed the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and the Federal Ministry of Justice to begin the process of amending the NYSC Act to provide the required legal backing.
The President stated that the comprehensive reforms are designed to modernise the NYSC, improve the security of corps members, and equip young Nigerian graduates with practical skills that will enhance their employability and prepare them for life after national service.
