Peter Obi Urges INEC to Publish Candidates’ Credentials for Greater Electoral Transparency

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to make public the academic certificates and credentials submitted by all candidates seeking elective offices, saying the move would enhance transparency and strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.

Obi made the call in a statement shared on Tuesday after completing his INEC nomination form, explaining that some of the questions contained in the document prompted him to reflect on the quality of leadership in the country.

He pointed to Section E of the form, which asks whether a candidate has ever been adjudged a lunatic or declared to be of unsound mind, saying the question raised concerns about whether Nigeria’s political leaders are exhibiting the qualities expected of responsible leadership.

Obi also referenced another question requiring candidates to declare whether they had ever presented a forged certificate to INEC, arguing that publicly disclosing the academic credentials and documents submitted by candidates would promote accountability and improve the credibility of the electoral process.

The former Anambra State governor further maintained that Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, economic hardship, hunger, and corruption should remain the government’s top priorities, stressing that political activities should not overshadow efforts to address the nation’s pressing challenges.
