Breaking: National Grid Collapses Again, Nigeria Plunged into Blackout

Nigeria was thrown into another nationwide blackout on Wednesday after the national electricity grid collapsed for the second time this year.

The collapse occurred at about 11:30 a.m., according to the Nigerian System Operator and the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC). In a public notice, AEDC confirmed that a “system disturbance” on the grid forced widespread outages across its franchise areas and other parts of the country.

“A system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 a.m. today, causing power outages across our service areas,” AEDC said in a statement.

This marks the second grid failure of 2025, following a similar incident on January 11.

A Recurring Problem

Nigeria’s national grid has long been plagued by instability. In 2024 alone, the system collapsed 12 times, crippling businesses and households nationwide. The most recent before today occurred on December 11, 2024, capping a year of frequent disruptions.

Experts attribute the repeated failures to aging infrastructure, limited transmission capacity, vandalism of power installations, and underinvestment in the sector. While the country has the capacity to generate up to 13,500 megawatts of electricity, the grid can only distribute about 4,000 megawatts, far below national demand.

The economic toll is severe, with industry analysts estimating annual losses of up to $29 billion due to unreliable power supply.

Search for Solutions

In response, federal and state governments are pursuing decentralised energy projects and investing in solar mini-grids to serve rural areas. Some states are also exploring independent power markets to reduce reliance on the fragile national system.

Despite these efforts, today’s collapse underscores the persistent challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector. As of press time, authorities said efforts were ongoing to restore electricity supply across affected regions.
