Former Nigerian military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has disclosed that northern military officers believed late Biafran leader, Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, had knowledge of the January 1966 coup d’état and considered taking action against him.
Gowon made the revelation in his memoir titled My Life of Duty and Allegiance, which is scheduled to be presented in Abuja on Tuesday.
According to an advance copy of the book obtained by TheCable, Gowon stated that suspicion among northern officers grew in the aftermath of the coup, leading to concerns about Ojukwu’s alleged involvement.
The former Head of State, who ruled Nigeria between July 1966 and July 1975, reportedly reflected on key events that shaped the country’s political and military history during that period.
The memoir was published by the Havilah Group, Lagos.
